Wathéča Records
A Listening Presentation
Wednesday, August 20, 2025 | 7 PM
Join us for a listening program led by Justis Brokenrope, a Sičháŋǧu Lakȟóta musician and educator currently residing in Bdé Óta Othúŋwe, Mní Sóta (Minneapolis, Minnesota). Brokenrope runs and curates Wathéča Records, an audio archival project that seeks to foreground and revitalize Indigenous music histories and languages through the collection and preservation of recorded media, such as vinyl and tape. Focusing on music and sound practices from Turtle Island, Brokenrope sources, documents, and brings new reverence to Indigenous music that was, and still is, overlooked in the canons of rock, folk, and country music. Brokenrope is currently the host of Wathéča Radio on NTS, and in the past year has presented his work at Walker Art Center, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Chinati Foundation.
For this program, Brokenrope will play a selection of records from Wathéča Records' collection and share some of the stories and communities they are connected to.
This program is free and open to the public.
